1. About Clayful
Clayful was founded to support schools in addressing mental health by providing low-stakes, accessible support for students struggling with everyday challenges and mental health issues.
Clayful is led by experienced educators, mental health professionals, and technologists passionate about creating scalable, preventative mental health solutions.
How does Clayful work?
Clayful is your school’s partner in fostering student and staff well-being. There are three components to Clayful’s comprehensive program: Coaching, Programs & Data.
Coaching
Clayful empowers students to thrive by offering on-demand, chat-based coaching with a real human coach in less than 60 seconds, in 133 languages.
Coaching is available on a school-issued device during school hours and on a personal device after school.
Coaching is aligned with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and with DETERS, our proprietary framework designed to help students develop crucial skills that prevent (or deter) crises and foster a healthier, more balanced life. To learn more about DETERS, read the white paper here.
Journals
Clayful journals are short, engaging online activities designed to support student well-being by building essential life skills. Each week, a new journal is shared, offering students actionable insights on topics aligned with the DETERS Framework. These activities are quick to complete (about 5-10 minutes) and provide students with an opportunity to reflect, learn, and grow in areas such as emotional regulation, decision-making, and resilience.
At the end of each journal, students can opt to connect with a coach for deeper conversations, revisit previous journals for further exploration, or finish for the day. By combining structured self-reflection with optional live coaching, Clayful journals empower students to take proactive steps toward mental wellness in a way that feels approachable and impactful.

Screeners
Clayful provides schools with evidence-based screening tools to identify students who may need additional support. These tools include assessments like the PHQ-4 (Patient Health Questionnaire), which screens for anxiety and depression. Screeners are quick and easy for students to complete, offering schools a reliable way to identify trends and target interventions effectively.
Key features:
- Early Identification: Screeners flag students who may be at risk for mental health challenges, enabling schools to provide timely support.
- Data-Driven Insights: Aggregated results help schools understand the overall well-being of their student population and inform program decisions.
- Integration with Coaching: Students who are in need of additional support can be seamlessly connected to Clayful coaching.
Clayful’s screening tools empower schools to act proactively, ensuring no student falls through the cracks. It also provides a quantitative path to understanding impact.
Data
Clayful’s data helps schools identify gaps, tailor interventions, and validate impact. For example, attendance improvements or reduced hopelessness rates can be shared with stakeholders to justify further investments in mental health resources. This data-driven approach supports effective implementation and long-term success.
Clayful provides schools with detailed data, including aggregated metrics on student usage and outcomes. All data is shared in compliance with privacy regulations.
Usage data:
Clayful provides insights into how students engage with the platform, helping schools understand its reach and effectiveness. Usage data includes:
- Coaching session stats: Total sessions, unique users, and activity by grade or time period, helping track engagement trends and spikes.
- Topic trends: Schools identify trending issues (e.g., relationships, academic stress) to address them system-wide with targeted supports.
- Demographics: Filters by grade, gender, or other categories show which groups are using Clayful most and where more outreach might help.
Outcomes data:
Clayful tracks student progress and measures impact, sharing data to evaluate its effectiveness. Key outcomes include:
- Emotional well-being: Screening tools track anxiety and depression. For example, Clayful reported a 53% decrease in anxiety after six weeks in one study.
- Behavioral impacts: Students who engaged three or more times with Clayful attended school 16 additional days on average.
- Student feedback: After sessions, 76% of students reported feeling more relaxed, and 81% felt less hopeless or alone.
